Winter is a magical time in Glacier National Park. With fewer visitors and limited driving access, the alpine landscape becomes even more awe-inspiring.
The only maintained roads are Apgar Village area, 11 miles (17 km) of the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the western side to Lake McDonald Lodge and a mile and a half (2.4 km) on the east side to St. Mary Campground.
Popular ranger-led snowshoe walks are available on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter. Tours depart from Apgar Visitor Center and last two hours. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Visitors Center, or you can bring your own. For more detailed information, visit the National Park Service website.
Looking for an elevated way to stay? The Lookout Suites at Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins offer an unbeatable location inside Glacier National Park, steps from the shores of Lake McDonald.
For those that don’t mind cold weather, free auto camping is available at Apgar Picnic Area and St. Mary Campground. If solitude is what you’re after, backcountry camping is available with a permit. Consult the Park Service for up-to-date winter information.
Apgar Village Lodge & Cabins is inside Glacier National Park near the West Entrance, just off Going-to-the-Sun Road on Apgar Loop Road.
